When a Lifetime of Care Finds a New Home

Sometimes the greatest donations aren't measured by how many bicycles arrive.

They're measured by the person who comes with them.

Yesterday, our ZummoBike team had the privilege of visiting Mr. Bill, a lifelong cyclist whose love of bicycles has stretched across more than forty years. Alongside his wife Kathleen, cycling wasn't just a hobby—it was part of the rhythm of their lives.

Bill has always ridden handcrafted steel frames built by master frame builder Kellogg. Not Kellogg's cereal—but Kellogg the craftsman, whose bicycles are known for their quality, beauty, and ride. Every one of Bill’s bicycles reflected the same philosophy: buy something exceptional, take care of it, and enjoy it for a lifetime.

And take care of them he did.

When we opened the garage, it became immediately obvious we weren't just looking at bicycles. We were looking at decades of craftsmanship and meticulous care. Six beautiful Kellogg bicycles stood there looking almost untouched. No scratches. No neglect. Every cable, every bearing, every component had been maintained with incredible attention to detail.

It was like walking into a museum where everything was still ready to ride.

But the bicycles were only the beginning.

Boxes of specialty tools. Connectors. Lubricants. Spare derailleurs. Components. Accessories. Decades of carefully collected knowledge, packed neatly into containers waiting for someone new to put them to work.

A treasure chest for young mechanics.

Our pickup crew included Kenny, his son Ben, Jireth —our four-year veteran and rising sixth grader—and Isaac, one of our newest fifth-grade mechanics. They didn't just load bicycles into a trailer.

They witnessed what lifelong stewardship looks like.

The story of how Bill found us is one we love.

Wanting his collection to continue making a difference, he visited the local Trek shop in West Chester and explained his challenge. He wasn't looking for someone to simply haul everything away. He wanted the bicycles to go somewhere they would be understood, appreciated, restored when necessary, and transformed into something meaningful.

Someone at the shop—Craig, Dina, or James—we're not sure who—gave him one simple piece of advice:

"You need to call ZummoBike."

We're certainly glad they did.

As we talked, we asked Bill if he'd ever consider spending some time in our shop.

His answer?

"I'll consider it."

We hope he does.

Because while the bicycles are remarkable, what our young people really need is Mr. Bill.

Every organization has mechanics.

Not every organization has caretakers.

Imagine a generation of young people learning not only how to repair bicycles, but how to respect them. Learning that cleaning isn't the last step—it's part of craftsmanship. Learning that attention to detail reflects pride in your work. Learning that maintaining something well is every bit as important as building it.

We can already picture it.

One day a new student asks, "Why do we clean every bolt before reassembly?"

And another student smiles and answers,

"That's how Mr. Bill taught us."

That's how culture gets built.

Not through manuals.

Through people.
