Workforce Development Disguised as a Bike Shop

Most people think Zummo is a bike shop.

The bicycles are simply the training platform.

What we’re really building is a community-owned workforce development system where young people learn responsibility, communication, customer service, leadership, troubleshooting, teamwork, and accountability through real work and real responsibility.

The best way to understand Zummo is not to read about it.

It’s to visit.

Spend twenty minutes in the shop and meet the young people who are building it.

What We Really Do

Every bicycle creates an opportunity.

An opportunity to learn.

An opportunity to solve problems.

An opportunity to communicate with customers.

An opportunity to work as a team.

An opportunity to develop conPidence.

At Zummo, young people don’t sit in classrooms learning about business.

They participate in a real business.

Customers walk through the door.

Repairs need to be completed.

Bikes need to be sold.

Problems need to be solved.

The lessons are real because the work is real.

Meet The Builders

One of the questions we get asked all the time is:

“Where do these young people come from?”

The answer is simple.

They come from our community.

Most arrive because of a bicycle. What happens next is often unexpected.

Elijah Salas was introduced to Zummo at the end of eighth grade when he stopped by our Covid-era shop with his fourth-grade brother, who had earned a bicycle for perfect attendance.

After a two-minute conversation, it was obvious he was looking for something bigger than meeting a few fellows running a incentive based bike program.

He was offered a job.

Over the next few years, Elijah became one of the architects behind our sales and service operation. Today he studies engineering at RIT while continuing to help develop the training systems that drive Zummo forward.

Eduardo Aguilar Pirst crossed paths with us through a high school leadership program at Norristown Area High School. During a bicycle giveaway event for outstanding freshmen, he stepped forward to help with technical and mechanical details.

His initiative stood out immediately.

That day earned him a job.

Today Eduardo helps lead service operations while mentoring younger contributors and supporting customers.

Joan arrived in our Norristown bike shop as a talkative second grader. We gave him a bike…

During the Covid years, he worked alongside Bo, Faisl older students and mentors, gradually discovering a talent for sales.

Today he is one of our longest-serving young contributors and a role model for younger kids entering the program.

Gilberto Pirst entered the Berwyn shop after earning a bicycle for perfect attendance as a third grader.

Before we even placed the bike on a rack, he was already examining it.

Within minutes we noticed unusual mechanical aptitude.

He earned a job on the spot.

Today he is one of our strongest young mechanics.

Paolo and Matteo Buonviri joined us because Paolo repeatedly called asking about a bicycle.

His persistence got our attention.

Eventually both brothers came into the shop and got involved.

Today they are senior mechanics helping train younger contributors while supporting sales and service operations.

The stories could go on and on.

Most of our young people arrive because of a bicycle, a recommendation, a school connection, or simple curiosity.

What keeps them here is the opportunity to contribute.

Over time, we’ve learned something important:

Young people are often looking for opportunity.

Sometimes all they need is for an adult to notice.

Why People Support Zummo

Supporters often tell us:

“I wish something like this existed when I was growing up.”

Because this isn’t traditional charity.

This is capacity building.

We’re helping young people become contributors.

The impact reaches far beyond bicycles.

Parents gain confidence.

Mentors find purpose.

Customers become supporters.

Young people discover what they are capable of accomplishing.

A bicycle often starts the conversation.

The relationships that follow change lives.

The Zummo Ecosystem

Over the years, we have realized that we are building something much larger than a bike shop.

We are building an ecosystem.

Young People

→ Mentors

→ Parents

→ Customers

→ Businesses

→ Educational Partners

→ Co-op Opportunities

→ Future Community Leaders

Every group strengthens the others.

The bicycles bring people together.

The relationships create the impact.

The Next 10 Years

Looking ahead, our goal is not simply to repair more bicycles.

Our goal is to develop a repeatable workforce development model that can strengthen communities.

A model where retired executives mentor Pifth graders.

Where college students train middle school students.

Where parents become partners.

Where local businesses help create pathways to employment.

What started in Norristown in 2015 has the potential to reach far beyond Berwyn.

Make an Introduction.

Some of our most important opportunities have started with a simple introduction.

We're Looking For The Next Ruth Loudon

Thirty years ago, while building a technology company, one of our most important contributors joined the team at age seventy-three.

Her name was Ruth Loudon.

She didn’t need a job.

She wanted purpose.

Ruth brought wisdom, judgment, perspective, and experience that younger people had not yet accumulated.

She became one of the most valuable people in the company.

Today we’re looking for more people like Ruth.

People who have knowledge to share.

People who want to stay engaged.

People who want to help young people accelerate their growth.

People who still have plenty left in the tank.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet you.

Come visit the shop.

The young people would love to meet you too.
