Mike the Investor Arrives

Sometimes the most important investments don’t arrive with paperwork, presentations, or a checkbook. 

Sometimes they arrive with a lifetime of experience, a garage full of tools, and a desire to make sure the next generation has what it needs to succeed. 

That was Mike. 

Mike is a lifelong bicycle enthusiast. For years he operated a community bike workshop from his garage, helping neighbors keep their bikes on the road. When he and his wife moved to a retirement community in Media, Pennsylvania, Mike didn’t retire from bicycles. Instead, he built another workshop and continued serving people around him. 

In March of 2025, Mike stopped by Zummo to see what all the activity was about. 

He spent time talking with several of our mechanics, learning about our mission, and watching young people develop skills through bicycles. Before long, he returned with some donated equipment and supplies. The gesture was meaningful enough that we added Mike’s name to our growing list of supporters and friends. 

Then came a phone call that none of us expected. 

In September of 2025, Mike called Paolo and explained that he was winding down his bicycle work so he could devote more time and attention to his wife’s health. He wanted Zummo to become the next steward of much of the equipment he had spent a lifetime collecting. 

What followed was one of the most significant donations in our nine-year history. 

Mike entrusted us with tools, parts, books, a beautiful bench vise, repair stands, a truing stand, specialty bicycle equipment, and three outstanding bicycles. Every item carried a story. Every item represented years of learning, service, and craftsmanship. 

But Mike’s greatest gift wasn’t the equipment. 

A few weeks later, he returned to teach. 

Standing alongside our mechanics, Mike introduced us to the art of waxing bicycle chains —a skill that many of us had never explored. He patiently shared techniques, answered questions, and passed along knowledge that only comes from decades of hands-on experience.

Looking back, I realized this was about much more than tools and bicycles. 

Mike wasn’t simply making a donation. 

He was making an investment. 

An investment in young people. 

An investment in learning. 

An investment in preserving skills that might otherwise be lost. 

And perhaps most importantly, an investment in a community he believed was worth strengthening. 

The tools Mike donated will help repair hundreds of bicycles. The bikes he gave us will find new riders. The equipment will support countless learning experiences. 

But the example he set—that a lifetime of knowledge should be passed forward—may be the most valuable gift of all.

Your workshop may have changed addresses, but your impact continues to grow every time one of our young mechanics picks up one of your tools to solve a problem that helps someone else. 

That’s the kind of investment that keeps paying dividends.
